Hair Woes

When I was younger, I had straight, silky black hair (I suspect much like Tala's, but thicker). As I grew up though, my hair transformed into this wavy mess that poufs up in the humidity. And it's always humid in the Philippines. I also don't get too attached to my hair so I've had it curled at least twice and have worn them in varying lengths over the years. I've had it coloured periodically since high school. To make my hair more manageable and because I am wash-and-wear, and as more hair treatment options become available, I've taken to having my hair smoothened (no longer rebonded, thanks to keratin treatments) regularly. Well, at least twice a year if I could (it's still expensive).

Aside from the wavy poufy mess, my genes have blessed me with a head full of white roots. As I got older, my regrowth has become white. White hair is abundant in my father's side of the family and they typically appear when we're young (Tala has a few random strands here and there). So I also got my hair coloured regularly. Since it's quite regular, I only need to really retouch my roots.

When I got pregnant, one of the first things I worried about was my hair. I think just two weeks before finding out, I had chopped my hair short again. I also had it retouched in anticipation of that Dubai trip. I said I'd go get my regular smoothening treatment when we'd get back.

Then I watched as my hair grew more unruly and my roots! Ghastly. I really wished I had longer hair instead, at least I'd be able to tie it back!

As soon as I hit my fourth month, I had my roots retouched (thank you God for organic and ammonia-free hair dyes!) I had also been researching about a more natural smoothening treatment whose product info says it is safe for pregnant women (I also asked the local distributor AND inquired with one of the few salons here that offered it). I even sent my doctor the product ingredients.

I was initially all set when, during the weekend while my hair was extra wild, I borrowed my sister's straightening iron and fixed my hair. I have also just recently learned how to blow dry my hair straight instead of just blow drying it to dry (when you Keratin, you only really need to dry your hair with a hairdryer and it's set). After finishing and realising that my hair wasn't too bad when blowdried then ironed, I realised that I could give up my wash-and-wear routine and replace it with a wash-style-wear routine instead of going for another hair treatment. The straightening iron was a lot cheaper too.

So now my hair and I are kind of friends again. I mean, at least it doesn't look like it has a mind of its own anymore! :D
